Jacarezinho neighborhoods reduce by 90% the infestation of Ae. aegypti mosquito with NVC

Results were obtained after eight months of joint work between Forrest Brasil Tecnologia, Jacarezinho City Hall and the Technological Institute of Paraná (Tecpar). 

The Brazilian city Jacarezinho gained international visibility after significantly reducing the Aedes aegypti infestation rates. With around 40 thousand inhabitants, and distant about 400 km from Curitiba, the municipality that is now a reference in the fight against dengue has been among those with the highest risk of outbreaks of dengue, zika and chikungunya in Brazil.

While Jacarezinho reduces mosquito infestation rates by 90% in the areas treated with sterile mosquitoes, the situation across the country is alarming and, according to the Ministry of Health, national numbers have grown by more than 200 percent. The city has become a success story and Forrest Innovations, which developed the 'Natural Vector Control' Pilot Project, presents these results to cities around the world. "Data show that technology coupled with education and awareness of local population contributed to the reduction of these indices. Now we finish a stage in the municipality, but we will continue to monitor the mosquito, "says director Elaine Cristina dos Santos. 

This achievement was possible through an unprecedented technology allied to the support and awareness of the population. Just over a year ago, the multinational Forrest Innovations, which in the country acts as Forrest Brasil Tecnologia, in partnership with the Technology Institute of Paraná (Tecpar), installed its mobile laboratory in the city and started the population monitoring of Aedes aegypti. Jacarezinho is the first city in the world to receive this project.

"We have developed a natural technique that does not involve genetic modification. Sterile male mosquitoes are produced from eggs collected in the affected region. The sterilization process takes place in two stages of treatment, at the beginning of larval stage and then in pupal stage, so that upon reaching the adult mosquito stage, the males will be sterile. Massive releases of sterile mosquitoes in nature results in reduction of new offspring, thereby reducing the proliferation of these mosquitoes. Male mosquito feeds only on plant sap, so they do not bite and do not pose any risk to population. On the other hand, females need the blood to complete the process of maturing the eggs and to do the posture, "explains the project coordinator, Lisiane de Castro Poncio.

The technique is based on the massive production of sterile males to be released in the wild. When a wild female copulates with a sterile male, it does not breed offspring, thus reducing the proliferation of these mosquitoes. In addition, the technique dispenses with the use of broad-spectrum insecticides that end up interfering with other species of the local fauna, making it effective in a natural way.

In the last eight months, Forrest scientists and technicians have performed the systematic release of sterile Aedes aegypti male mosquitoes in neighborhoods of Jacarezinho. The three neighborhoods with highest infestation rates were choosen to be treated with sterile male mosquitoes: Airport, New Airport and Vila Leão. Other regions with similar profile were monitored weekly as control areas. "In addition to these releases, we have a team in the region working with research, visiting the homes of the most affected areas and seeking to raise awareness of the mosquito population," says the coordinator.

The last Aedes aegypti Infestation Index Rapid Survey (LIRAa), released on April 10, 2019, revealed zero mosquito infestation rates in the New Airport and Airport Districts. These sites were among the worst-infested neighborhoods, registering 15% in February 2018. "This result is a great achievement and reflects the intense work of Forrest Innovations in partnership with the Technology Institute of Paraná (Tecpar), local authorities and the community", celebrates Elaine Paldi, director of Forrest Brasil Tecnologia.

Dengue cases in Brazil increase 264%

According to the Ministry of Health, Brazil registers a 264.1% increase in dengue cases, from 62,900 in the first 11 weeks of 2018 to 229,064 in the same period of this year (up to March 16). The incidence, which considers the proportion of cases in relation to the number of inhabitants, has a rate of 109.9 cases / 100 thousand inhabitants until March 16 of this year. The number of deaths from the disease also increased, from 67%.

State of Paraná has an increase of 1.42% in cases of Dengue

Data from the Ministry of Health indicate that the number of dengue cases in the state of Paraná increased by 1.42% compared to the same period last year. Until March 16 of this year, the state reported 6,084 cases of the disease, in the same period of 2018, were 399 cases. The incidence in the state is 53.6 cases / 100 thousand inhabitants. Paraná reported two deaths as a result of the disease this year.
